Idli | Chennai | Amma Unavagam | Part 6

Amma Unavagam means Mother's eatery in Tamil. And since I am talking about Tamil, the word "Amma" refers to Selvi Jayalalitha, honorable Chief minister of the state of Tamil Nadu.

During last general election, I did not have a choice to decide for whom I should be rooting for as the prime ministerial candidate was from my home state - Gujarat. But, living in Chennai taught me couple of things that Tamil Nadu has and Gujarat can learn from it.

One of those things is - state run Amma Unavagam offering high quality, hygienic staple South Indian food for unbelievably low rate. An idli for 1 rupee (0.017 USD), 3 rupees for rice varieties and so on. With that price, you may think that only people with low income would go to these eateries (plural. yes, there are so many of them across urban Chennai), but you would be surpriced when you visit one of them during peak breakfast or lunch hour. Spotting people with iPhone or Samsung Galaxy is common .

Since its inception, these Amma Unavagam eateries have sold 114 million Idlis till the date of this post.

So, next time when you are in Chennai, do not miss to try Idlis at one of the Amma Unavagams. Just ask your cab or auto driver to take you to the nearest one. They are all over the city. If not Idlis, then just visit it see how a state run program can benefit so many people and improve the quality of the society.
