In part 1 of this series on Idlis, I wrote about Saravana Bhavan.
As I said that one of the reasons why I chose to move to Chennai is because of my love for Idlis at Saravana Bhavan. I was introduced to their pure vegetarian south indian food at their branches in the US, mostly at Woodbridge Ave, Iselin, New Jersey and once in San Jose, California. My favorite dish at Iselin Saravana Bhavan was 14-pieces Mini Idlis. That's enough about the Saravana Bhavan for now, let me move on to the topic of this post - Sangeetha Veg Restaurant.
Overview: Sangeetha Veg Restaurant (SVR) is a Chennai-based pure veg restaurant chain with 30+ locations in Chennai and 10+ locations across the globe including in the US, UK, France, UAE and Malaysia. SVR serves equally good if not better Idlis than Saravana Bhavan. But, the USP of the SVR is their chutneys. More on to that under chutneys section below.
Service: Professional and uniformed waiters. Generous re-fills, if you know how to ask.
Price: Rs. 28/- for 1 plate idli.
Idli: Very soft and typical Tamil Idlis. Much better than Saravana Bhavan's.
Chutney: Tri-colored chutneys - orange, white and green colored. Orange one is tomato and onion chutney, which is very smooth and spicy. Green chutney is made with fresh mint (you can smell it) and coconut. The more you eat, the more you want. And the last one is the white chutney - authentic south indian coconut chutney. These chutneys are finger-licking and the primary reason why I would rate SVR higher than Saravana Bhavan.
Sambhar: Sufficiently thick and very tasty. Yum. One cup won't be enough.
Location: I have been to their branches in Chennai @ Poonamallee, Santhome high road and Guindy.
