In part 1 and part 2 of this series on Idlis, I wrote about Idlies at the Hotel Saravana Bhavan and Sangeetha Veg Restaurant (SVR) in Chennai.
Before moving to Chennai, I have not heard about any veg south indian restaurant chain other than the Hotel Sarvana Bhavan (HSB). My love for Idlies forced me to explore other options and luckily I found Murugan Idli Shop after doing a simple search on Bing - "best idli in chennai".
Overview: First Murugan Idli Shop (MIS) was opened in Madurai - a Tamil Nadu town better known as Athens of East. Today, like HSB and SVR, MIS also has many branches in Chennai, Madurai and also few branches in Singapore. The USP of this place is their cotton like soft Idlies and unlimited chutneys. They serve all their food on banana leaves in a traditional style.
Service: Uniformed waiters. Ready to re-fill chutneys promptly and comfortably.
Price: Rs. 13.50/- for 1 idli. Unlimited chutneys and Sambhar - free.
Idli: The BEST idlies available in restaurant anywhere in the world. Ultra-soft, moist, whitest, fulfilling, hot.
Chutney: Four chutneys. (1) Coconut chutney - staple Tamil Nadu coconut chutney. Freshly made. Right most in the picture below. (2) Imli chutney - tangy. Second from right, brown colored. (3) Mint chutney - made with dal - gram. Second from left in the picture. (4) Tomato chutney. Served warm. Yummy. First from left.
Managing to eat Idlies with these four chutneys individually, sometimes dipping in two or more chutneys in one bite and at the same time not letting these chutneys run out of your flat, fresh and green banana leaf is nothing short of an art.

Sambhar: I normally skip sambhar here for two reasons - it is not that extra ordinary and I don't want to indulge in managing hot poured sambhar on biconvex shaped Idlies.
